Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the experiences of using the service of people with mental disorder and their families and to suggest ways to improve the community mental health services based on this. To this end, focus group interviews were conducted for 6 mentally impaired people and 5 mentally impaired families using mental health welfare centers and mental rehabilitation facilities. After analyzing the data, 3 themes and 8 sub-themes were derived. The meaning of the experience of research participants is ¡®change through service participation: expanding the boundaries of life¡¯, ¡®conditions of change: choice and connection¡¯, and ¡®need to strive for sustainable recovery: expansion and empowerment¡¯. Based on these findings, practical and policy suggestions for improving community-based services such as provision of information and education related to service use, expansion of opportunities for service users to participate in the mental health policy decision process, advocacy and solidarity activities of families, etc. were presented.
